I had learned about jewelry making and metalworking at junior college and Yamawaki Art College and traditional Japanese metalwork (Engraving, Chasing, and Repousse, Inlay) at Yanaka metalworking studio. Yanaka studio’s teachers were Teruyuki Tanaka, Shoei Saito, Ikka Nakajima. They are great master metalsmiths. I have had work experience in two companies related to Accessory. History and Future of “TOKYO CHOKIN”
The history of metalworking in Japan dates back to the Yayoi period. The basic techniques, which are called Kebori, Sukashibori and Zogan, already existed in the Kofun period and are found on kanbo (cap-shaped crowns), kanzashi (Ornamental hairpins) and rings. In the late Heian period, they were also developed to decorate samurai swords and armor. During the Muromachi period, Iebori, the most famous and prestigious style, was used by the Shogunate family. Soon, Machibori appeared as a different style from Iebori. Somin Yokoya expanded Machibori to include more free ideas and designs. Kiseru, Netsuke and other things for common people could now be made by several master artisans. Yokoya is also the founder of Katakiribori, a method of hand engraving which resembles Japanese brush painting. A lot of exquisite works were created using this technique in the Edo period and the early part of the Meiji period. Now, these techniques are used to add artistic essences on jewelry, flower vases, tea ceremony utensils, etc. We hope to pass the Chokin style and spirit on to the next generation.
